In sports, the most important value or characteristic that must be embodied by an official is FAIRNESS or EQUALITY. An official must be neutral and not favorable to one particular side, team, or player. An official must officiate a game with an unbiased character for the game to have impartial results.
In a game, when the official is biased or unfair, all other sportsmen or athletes will feel injustice and unfairness. Each one trains for each game believing that they all have a fair shot in winning. Therefore, it is unfair if an official would use their authority to undermine the fair playing field.
Moreover, the audience and other aspiring sportsmen or athletes will lose their faith in the games. After the games, they would think that the winner was predetermined. Sometimes worse, that the official was intentionally trying to get one side to lose.
