Difference b/w distillation and fractional distillation

  The difference between simple distillation and fractional distillations is:

Simple Distillation / Distillation
- used to separate liquids with boiling point gaps of atleast 50 degrees
- uses a simple apparatus with 2 flasks and a condenser
- process do not have to be repeated
- can be used to separate a solvent from a solute
- it is used to purify a sea water

Fractional Distillation
- used to separate liquids with closer boiling points
- uses a complex apparatus with a fractionating column
- process has to be repeated several times to get the pure components
- cannot be used to separate a solvent from a solute
- used in crude oil refining
